“Corpus Christi” – Censorship attempts escalate

Last time (04.10.2012) the people protesting the “blasphemous” play “Corpus Christi” promised to return with more support (some claimed that they would be complemented by Golden Dawn members; Greece’s resident ultranationalistic, if not fascist party). Yesterday afternoon they made good on their promise.

News agencies speak of a crowd of around 50-100 people gathering outside the theatre; among them the Golden Dawn MPs Elias Panayotaros and Christos Pappas (the same one who brought the Elder Pastitsios issue to Parliament). The reports speak of 4 MPs of Golden Dawn, but the other two are not mentioned by name and I didn’t see any of them in the videos.

“Corpus Christi” targeted yet again

Today we have the latest chapter in the rekindling of religious censorship in Greece, after the incident with Elder Pastitsios. You may remember this piece of news. It happened a couple of months ago, in June, when several actors that took part in the “Corpus Christi” play were arrested on charges of blasphemy. Well, there have been developments.

According to TVXS.gr yesterday (04.10.2012) the accused appeared before a court to defend the play, since the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece didn’t think their remorseful press release was enough and finally filed for a restraining order on the grouds of blaspheming against Christ and demanding the play be cancelled.

Arrests over “Corpus Christi”

According to the ΣΚΑΙ.gr website, yesterday afternoon (June 9th, 2012) 3 actors that took part in the “Corpus Christi” play, which opened in Athens last week, were arrested with the charge of blasphemy (though they were released the very same day). It is unknown who filed the charge, but a few days earlier the Synod of the Church of Greece released the following statement, about the play:

Διαβάζω στην ιστοσελίδα ΣΚΑΙ.gr πως χθες το απόγευμα (9/6/2012) συνελήφθησαν 3 ηθοποιοί που συμμετέχουν στη θεατρική παράσταση “Corpus Christi” που ανεβαίνει στο Θέατρο Χυτήριο με την κατηγορία της βλασφημίας (αν και αφέθηκαν ελεύθεροι την ίδια μέρα). Δεν αναφέρεται ποιος κατέθεσε τη μήνυση, ούτε και πως συνέβη η έγκαιρη επέμβαση των αστυνομικών του τμήματος Ομονοίας, αλλά ήδη πριν από μερικές ημέρες, η Διαρκής Ιερά Σύνοδος εξέδωσε δελτίο τύπου, όπου αναφέρονται τα εξής:
